Bloom

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Inspired by desert plant life adapted to the extreme conditions of the Arabian Desert namely the national flower of the UAE - Tribulus Omanese - Bloom serves as a catalyst to engage the local neighborhood, function as a community nodal point of interaction, and promote sustainable practices in in the built environment. Seven tensile membrane shading Blooms represent each Emirate within the UAE.

The guiding principles are to harness the environment in a passive manner by means of shading, solar harvesting and water harvesting, which in turn support flora and fauna and temper the extreme heat and humidity of the summer months.

This public space can serve functions beyond a place of respite, including forums for community gatherings, farmer’s markets, and a localized desert museum nurturing awareness of the relationship between sun and water in a desert environment by means of Bloom’s life cycle system.

The solution is dynamic rather than static, implementing state of the art technology such as OPVs and luminescent coatings in conjunction with passive strategies in a holistic package. Bloom introduces a new innovative public amenity typology merged into the urban framework of Abu Dhabi that can be replicated across the city and the UAE.
